The Magical Forest...An Choill Draíochta

Hello and Welcome to The Magical Forest…

The Magical Forest (or in Irish An Choill Draíochta) is a Mosaic and Book project being facilitated by artist Sean Corcoran at the Gaelscoil na Deise primary school in Waterford, Ireland. Sean is the Artistic Director of The Art Hand, an art school on the Waterford coast near Bunmahon. He has been commissioned to facilitate this project to celebrate the transition to a beautiful new school that is currently being built.

The mosaic itself will be 3 metres wide and will be installed on a prominent wall inside the new school. In addition to the permanent artwork we will create a special story book that is linked to the mosaic and will feature drawings by the kids.

The mosaic and book will depict a lush and vibrant forest, full of trees, flowers, a stream and a pond. Many creatures including Frogs, Hedgehogs, Squirrels and a Fox will make their home in The Magical Forest.

All students and teachers in the school are involved in the project and will be adding characters and ideas to the artwork and story during its development and creation. We are asking all students families and members of the community to get involved by contributing items to the mosaic which will contain a mix of tiles, glass, buttons, jewels and gems. So please keep an eye out for some small personal items, some old jewellery, pebbles or marbles perhaps. We will particularly need green items, leaf designs, flower designs and animal or insect designs.

We’re delighted that the story will be published in a colourful new book and everyone involved will be given a copy. The mosaic and book will be ready for unveiling in late May/early June to coincide with the move to the new school.
